ECO SCHOOLS HOW TO

Registration
Registration forms are available at the Kenya Organization for Environmental Education (KOEE) offices.
Before embarking on the registration process, schools are advised to consult with their head teacher and other staff in order to map out the strategy for the school.
The guidelines for consultation can be obtained from the KOEE offices.
The completed registration forms and the documented consultation report should be forwarded to the national eco-school coordinator.

Implementing The Eco-Schools Programme

Implementation encompasses the following seven (7) steps:Formation of an eco-school committee
The committee should consist of representatives of pupils, staff, board of governors, non-teaching staff, parents, the head teacher and other school administrators.
The committee has the responsibility of planning, implementing and evaluating the school environmental action learning activities and ensuring their continuity.

Environmental Audit
This entails a review of the state of the environment of the school. It ranges from: assessing the level of litter in the school grounds to checking infrastructure for inefficiencies.

An environmental audit acts as a starting point for the school to be able to set practical and realistic measurable goals.
Environmental audits make school/ community environmental problems/issues known hence ignite the need for an action.
SEA can generate a series of ideas and possible solutions to the environmental problems, which can be used to develop a school environmental policy, a set of activities to be implemented and a plan of action.

Plan Of Action
This is a written document that states the series of specific targets in a specified time which together will lead to agreed environmental improvements for the year. It is developed using the information from the environmental audit.

Monitoring And Evaluation
This involves maintaining a record of progress and changes within and outside the school comparing it to the (time-zero) i.e. when the environmental audit was carried out.
The changes can be in behavior, school aesthetics, and participation of the school in environmental activities etc. over a defined period of time.
This enables schools to asses the success of their environmental action learning programmes and make necessary adjustments if need be.

Curriculum Work
Efforts should be made to integrate environmental education into the curriculum.
In environmental action learning, it should be emphasized that classroom activities should complement out-of-class operations.
Students should be encouraged to share their work with the whole school and community at large.

Informing and Involving the School and the wider Community
This can be done by use of notice boards, newsletters, and school assembly exhibitions, the press and the radio.
Involvement of the schools in community events, campaigns for the environment, professional talks, community service and environmental clubs, have proved to be very effective strategies for outreach.

Eco-Code/ School Environmental Policy
This is a statement of objectives demonstrating the schools commitment to environmentally friendly actions.
This should be negotiated by pupils and staff and should be related to the action plan and curriculum work.
Each statement should describe an action that all pupils and staff can carry out.
The code should be prominently displayed somewhere and be updated as new issues are addressed.
The eco-code should enable pupils to develop personal values and codes.
