SUSTAINABLE ENVIROMENT AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FAQs

The Kenya Organization for Environmental Education (KOEE) has initiated the Sustainable Environment and Community Development project in Kisumu city. The project has started off with the capacity building component which is expected to last two years (Jan 2007- Dec 2009).

As part of a national strategy Kisumu Municipality has worked out plans to encourage sustainable and local development of urban poor areas. Focus in all plans is people’s active participation. The implementation, however, lags behind as the local authorities do not have the sufficient resources and tools to involve the civil society. Neither has the civil society the capacity to respond to the requirements. It is against this background that KOEE is implementing the Sustainable Environment and Community Development (SECODE) Project in Kisumu.

The project will have its focus on empowering the civil society and its organisations in the slum area of Nyalenda by introducing methods and knowledge about participatory urban development processes. The goal is: Through training and capacity building of the civil society, to enable them to participate in a constructive dialogue with the Municipality on how their local area should be developed.
