Kenya Organization for Environmental Education (KOEE) coordinates the Eco-Schools program in Kenya, the program is tailored to address local needs and local environmental problems such as HIV/AIDS among others. The organization has also sought to use their eco-school program as a platform to implement HIV/AIDS intervention in Kenyan high schools.
The Organization identified HIV/AIDS pandemic as a major issue in the socio-cultural dimension of the environment in Kenya since it has continued to deprive the country of its most vital human and economic resources. As part of its mandate and as a way of contributing to the National AIDS strategic plan of reducing HIV/AIDS prevalence among the youth by 20 – 30 %; KOEE decided to embark on designing specific needs-based sustainable solutions.
In the past six years, KOEE has managed to establish a network of schools and community groups throughout the country. These form the hub of KOEE’s other projects and environmental conservation activities geared towards public awareness and advocacy. The Eco-schools program has facilitated schools to formulate and implement school environmental policies aimed at promoting best practices in environmental management as well as contribute to poverty alleviation through environmental friendly micro-projects. The program also facilitates the integration of local environmental problems into teaching and learning processes in schools. Additionally, the program promotes networking, experience and information sharing, school-community cooperation as well as development and adherence to environmental rules called Eco-codes.
